Long-tail traffic converted at 6.2% vs head-term 0.9% on the same offer
We compared two traffic streams landing on the same product, one from head terms, one from long-tail, across 90 days.
— Head-term sessions: 18,000, convert ▇ 0.9%
— Long-tail sessions: 4,100, convert ▇▇▇▇▇▇ 6.2%
— Head-term volume per query: ~12,000
— Long-tail volume per query: ~140
The head terms pulled 4x the traffic but a fraction of the conversions; their intent was diffuse and top-of-funnel. The long-tail queries named the exact problem the product solved.
Revenue from the smaller long-tail stream beat the head-term stream by 1.6x.
So what: search volume and revenue are not the same axis. Specific queries carry buyer intent that big head terms dilute.
Benchmark of the week: queries of 5+ words converted at 4.8x the rate of 1-2 word head terms across 22,000 sessions.
