Perpetual vs time-limited usage rights

Perpetual vs time-limited usage rights

Today's term: usage rights = how long and where a brand can run your content. Two flavors. Perpetual = forever. Time-limited = a set window, like 3 months, then it expires.

Why it matters: 'forever' sounds harmless but it's the priciest thing you can give. The brand reuses your face indefinitely; you can never re-sell that slot or walk it back.

Simple example: a brand asks for perpetual rights on a $500 video. A 6-month term might add $250 to your fee. Perpetual should add far more, often the value of the whole deal again, sometimes double.

Your move: default to time-limited. If they insist on perpetual, charge like it never ends, because it doesn't.
