Case #022: The image that beat every video
Conventional wisdom said video. We had four videos, all losing. A lead-gen offer for solar, $46 per lead, $3,800 spent, $2,500 back — a 34% loss across a video-only account.
The assumption was that solar needed motion: panels in sunlight, a happy homeowner, a savings counter ticking up. Every video told that story and every video lost money. We'd spent two weeks iterating on footage.
Out of stubbornness more than strategy, I made one static image: a plain before-and-after of a single power bill — $284 crossed out, $61 written below it. No motion, no music, no production. Just a number that hurt and a number that didn't.
We ran the static against the best video, $400 each.
The still image embarrassed the footage:
— video: 0.9% CTR, $59 cost per lead
— static bill: 3.1% CTR, $22 cost per lead
The image stopped the scroll because it was specific and legible in a feed where videos demanded a commitment nobody wanted to make. People understood the offer in half a second.
Full run on the static:
— $8,400 spent
— $15,900 revenue
— 89% ROI
The lesson: motion isn't persuasion — sometimes the highest-converting creative is a single legible number the eye can grasp before the thumb moves on.
