A brand reverse-engineered the #1 result's anchor ratios — and matched its way to position 2
Word is an outdoor-gear retailer that stopped guessing anchors and copied the math of whoever was already winning.
What they pulled from the SERP leader:
— the #1 page's profile sat at ~55% branded, 25% generic/URL, 15% partial-match, 5% exact
— the retailer's own target page was 40% exact-match — wildly over-optimized by comparison
The correction, over one quarter:
— built 60 new links weighted heavily branded and generic
— let exact-match dilute from 40% down to 9%
The outcome: the page that had been stuck at position 11 climbed to 2, settling into the same anchor shape as the leader.
The read for anyone fighting a stubborn page: the top result is a free blueprint of what Google considers a 'natural' profile for that exact query. Don't invent a target ratio — read the winner's and match it. Watch this space.
