Cutting two ideas out of one hook lifted retention from 55% to 81%
Here's a confession about cramming. A photography creator tried to hook with everything at once: "In this video I'll cover lighting, posing, and editing for portraits." Three promises, zero pull. 3s retention: 55%.
The thing is, three promises split the viewer's attention into three weak threads instead of one strong one. The brain can't grip a bundle. So we threw out two and went all-in on the sharpest: "This one window trick makes any portrait look like it cost $500."
And then a single, vivid promise gave the viewer one clear reason to stay.
The result: 3s retention went from 55% to 81%, and the video tripled the channel's median reach.
The lesson: one hook, one promise — a single sharp idea beats three blunt ones every time.
