Ch. 19: I Went Narrow on Purpose and Ranked Twice as Fast
My first site was a broad "home improvement" mess that never gained traction — too many topics, no authority on any. For my second attempt I did the opposite: I picked one absurdly narrow subject, "epoxy garage floors," and refused to write about anything else.
Every post lived inside that world: prep, coatings, costs, DIY vs pro, flake colors, cure times. 55 posts, all one topic. The domain looked like the internet's epoxy-floor specialist.
It ranked shockingly fast — page 1 for competitive terms by month 5, where my broad site took 14 months for less. Google clearly read the topical concentration as authority.
It hit $2,800/mo by month 11 on just 24,000 sessions, because the intent (people coating a $3,000 garage floor) was premium.
Lesson banked: a narrow site earns topical authority far faster than a broad one — depth in one subject beats shallow coverage of ten.
