Case study: embedded Trustpilot widget vs native reviews on conversion
A software review site tested social proof: embed a third-party Trustpilot widget vs collect native on-site reviews. Same 30 product pages, split test, 8 weeks.
Trustpilot embed
Pros: instant credibility, recognizable brand, no moderation
Cons: third-party JS (~+0.4s LCP), links readers off-site, schema credit goes to Trustpilot
Native reviews
Pros: your schema, no off-site leak, faster, owns the UGC
Cons: slow to accumulate, you moderate spam
Result: Trustpilot widgets converted 7% better short-term (brand trust) but the off-site links leaked ~3% of visitors. Native reviews converted lower at first, then overtook by week 6 as volume built — and earned the site its own star snippets, adding organic CTR Trustpilot never could.
Gotcha nobody mentions: the Trustpilot widget's aggregateRating can't be claimed in your schema — Google attributes it to Trustpilot, so it does nothing for your SERP stars.
My pick: native reviews for long-term SEO value; Trustpilot only as a launch crutch.
Bottom line: borrowed trust converts faster but builds nothing — native reviews compound into your own snippets.
