The 'one H1 per page' panic

The 'one H1 per page' panic

"Multiple H1s will tank your rankings."

They won't.

Google's own John Mueller said on record that multiple H1s are fine and HTML5 explicitly allows one per sectioning element. The actual mistake people make chasing this rule is worse than the rule: they demote a real section heading to an H2 it shouldn't be, or wrap a logo in an H1 because the theme did it by default.

Here's what actually happens: your heading outline breaks. A screen reader and a parser both read your page as 'one topic, then a flat list of equal-weight chunks' instead of a nested hierarchy. That's the thing that hurts comprehension — not the tag count.

Fix: stop counting H1s. Run the page through a heading-outline checker and confirm the nesting tells the actual story. (A logo is an image, not a heading. Ever.)
