The "Test Live URL" trap in GSC
Most common mistake I see: people click Test Live URL in URL Inspection, see a green "URL is available to Google," and assume the page is indexed. It isn't. Live test only renders the current page on demand — it ignores the actual index.
What the tool does well:
— The default (non-live) view shows real indexed status and last crawl date
— Live test is great for checking a fix before requesting indexing
Where people go wrong:
— Treating "available to Google" as "indexed by Google"
— Not noticing the "URL is not on Google" banner above
The fix: read the top banner first, not the live-test result. "URL is on Google" = indexed. "URL is on Google, but has issues" = indexed with warnings. Anything else means not in the index, full stop.
Best for: verifying a fix, not confirming index status.
Not for: anyone who skips the banner.
