Case: Partner-sourced customers churned 35% less than direct — but partner-influenced showed no such gap

A vendor with a mature partner ecosystem ran a retention analysis distinguishing two often-blurred categories: partner-sourced (the partner originated the deal) versus partner-influenced (a partner touched a deal the vendor originated). The retention difference between them was the finding.

Across ~1,800 accounts over 24 months:

— Partner-sourced customers: 24-month logo retention ~35% better than direct-sourced.
— Partner-influenced (but vendor-sourced): retention statistically indistinguishable from direct.

The interpretation: a partner who originated the relationship typically continues to service it — implementation, support, expansion — creating a stickiness that a partner who merely influenced a single deal does not. Ongoing service relationship, not the act of referral, appears to drive the retention premium.

The confound is significant and the vendor names it: partner-sourced deals also skewed toward larger, more committed enterprises (partners bring their existing book), which retain better regardless of source. When they controlled for company size and segment, the retention premium narrowed from 35% to roughly 18% — still real, but half the headline was a size artifact.

This refines the common 'partner customers retain better' claim (echoed in various channel ROI studies) into something more precise: the premium attaches to ongoing-service partner relationships, not to the referral event, and shrinks substantially once you control for the larger accounts partners tend to bring.

The trade-off in acting on this: favoring partner-sourced deals for their retention can over-concentrate revenue in the partner channel and raise dependency risk if a key partner defects.

Implications: Disaggregate 'partner customers' into sourced versus influenced before crediting retention to your partner program. And control for account size — much of the apparent premium may be selection, not stickiness.
