Publishing a real editorial and corrections policy: a trust-signal test

Publishing a real editorial and corrections policy: a trust-signal test

The question: do formal transparency artifacts — editorial standards, a corrections policy, funding disclosure — move anything, or only satisfy a rater checkbox?

A documented case: a news-adjacent publisher added a detailed editorial-standards page, a public corrections log, ownership and funding disclosure, and per-article 'how we fact-check' notes across ~150 pages. Over ~5 months, ranking moved within noise (~0.5 positions), but the site was subsequently accepted into Google News and earned two 'trusted source' style mentions from media-literacy projects.

This is the QRG's trust dimension at work — section 2.5 treats transparency about who is responsible as central to trust, especially for news and YMYL.

Counter-evidence: the measurable wins (News acceptance, third-party trust mentions) are gatekeeper and reputation outcomes, not direct ranking outcomes. Conflating them overstates the case.

Caveat: a corrections policy that is never used is theater; this publisher actually logged corrections, which is the harder and more credible part. The case rewards the practice, not the page.

What we still don't know: whether transparency artifacts feed ranking systems at all, or whether their value is entirely in gatekeeper decisions (News, Discover eligibility) and human reputation assessment that influences the algorithm only indirectly.
