Q: Our year-over-year exploration came back empty before a certain date — why and what was the fix?
A: An analyst tried a 14-month comparison in Explore and got no data past the prior 2 months. Event-level data retention was stuck on the 2-month default:

Changed 'Event data retention' from 2 months to 14 months

Note: this only affects Explore/user-level data going forward, not standard reports
The change can't recover already-expired user-level data, so they also enabled BigQuery export to preserve raw events permanently. New explorations from that point had full 14-month range.
TL;DR: The 2-month retention default silently caps exploration history. Set it to 14 months on day one — expired user-level data won't come back.
