Most data PR forgets that some desks run on images, not numbers. The setup: an outdoor-gear brand with a story about shrinking glaciers — worthy, but crowded. A hundred climate pitches hit those editors weekly.
The angle was visual. We paired the data with a then-and-now photo series: the same glacier, same vantage point, twenty years apart, shot to match exactly. Picture desks — the editors who choose what images run — have power, and almost nobody pitches them directly.
The pitch went to picture editors, not reporters: "High-res then-and-now glacier series, free to use with credit and link." A ready-to-run visual that fills a hole on the page is a gift to a stretched picture desk.
Result: 17 placements, many in outlets that ran the photos large with a backlink in the credit line, 33 referring domains. Several pieces used our images precisely because the writer found the data after the picture editor flagged the photos. The visual was the door; the data walked through it.
A picture editor emailed: "These are exactly the comparison shots we can never source. Sending more like this."
<b>Lesson:</b> Reporters aren't the only gatekeepers. A strong, credited, ready-to-publish image pitched to the picture desk can open doors the data alone never would.
