Jump cuts aren't lazy editing — they're the highest information density tool in short-form video.

Jump cuts aren't lazy editing — they're the highest information density tool in short-form video.

The assumption that jump cuts are a beginner mistake comes from long-form production standards, where continuity matters. In short-form, the viewer's brain doesn't register micro-jumps the same way — if the speaker's position doesn't change drastically, a cut of 0.3-0.5 seconds isn't jarring. It's just faster.

The real question isn't "jump cut vs. smooth transition" — it's whether your jump cut serves the content or fights it. A jump cut mid-sentence that removes an "um" = good. A jump cut that creates a visual discontinuity that distracts from what you're saying = bad.

For talking-head content, jump cuts with slightly different camera angles (even slightly) feel far more natural than straight jump cuts. A 2-degree angle shift between cuts tricks the eye into accepting the discontinuity as intentional.

For B-roll-heavy content, jump cuts between main camera and B-roll are seamless by design — the cut to different footage gives the viewer's brain a reset that makes the return to main camera feel fresh, not jarring.

The rule: use jump cuts to increase density, not to cover mistakes. If the jump cut is removing bad content rather than good content that moves too slowly, the problem is in the script, not the cut.
