User intent mapping is the foundational skill of content site strategy — and most operators learn it the hard way.

The hard way: publish 100 articles targeting high-volume keywords, watch 80% of them fail to rank, then realize that ranking failure was predictable from the intent mismatch.

The framework:

Informational intent: user wants to learn something. "How to start a content site." Content should teach. Monetization is indirect (ads, email capture). Depth and clarity are the quality signals.

Commercial investigation: user is evaluating options. "Best affiliate marketing tools." Content should compare and recommend. Monetization via affiliate is natural and expected. Trust signals matter most here.

Transactional intent: user is ready to act. "Buy Ahrefs." Content should remove friction. Mostly captured by branded searches — hard to compete with on content sites.

Navigational intent: user wants a specific site. Don't write content for these — you won't rank for them.

The actionable part: before adding any keyword to your calendar, categorize the intent. Then verify by looking at what's actually ranking. Google shows you the intent it expects — match it or don't compete.
