Outbound sales vs. passive listing: which approach generates faster domain exits.
Listing on Sedo, Afternic, and DAN.com is the passive approach. It works for premium domains that buyers are actively searching for. It doesn't work well for mid-tier domains ($500-$5,000 range) where buyers need to be found.
Outbound approach for mid-tier domains:
1. Identify 15-30 potential end-users — businesses or individuals who would benefit most from owning the domain
2. Find their contact information (LinkedIn, company website, email lookup tools)
3. Send a short, direct email. Don't oversell. State that you own the domain, explain briefly why it fits their business, and invite a response
4. Follow up once, 7-10 days later, then move on
Response rates: 2-5% is realistic. Close rates from responses: 20-40%.
For a portfolio of 20 domains, running outbound campaigns generates faster exits than waiting for inbound interest.
Combine both approaches: list passively while running active outreach in parallel.
