"Self-referencing canonicals do nothing — skip them."

"Self-referencing canonicals do nothing — skip them."

They skipped them. It cost them.

A store with faceted navigation generated thousands of URL variants (?sort=, ?color=, ?utm=) all serving near-identical content, none with canonical tags. Google indexed 41,000 URLs for a catalog of 5,200 products. Crawl budget drained into parameter sludge; new products took 8-11 days to get indexed.

They added self-referencing canonicals on clean product URLs plus canonicals from parameter variants back to the clean version. No content change.

Ten weeks later: indexed URLs fell to 9,800, new-product indexing time dropped to under 48 hours, and organic clicks to product pages rose 19% as crawl effort refocused on pages that mattered.

Self-referencing canonicals look pointless on a single clean page. At scale, with parameters multiplying, they're the difference between Google understanding your catalog and drowning in it. The "useless" tag was holding the whole thing together.
