The wisdom comes from dance and lip-sync creators where audio <i>is</i> the content. It got over-generalized to every niche by people who never tested original sound.
The mechanism: trending audio helps TikTok <i>classify and cluster</i> your video with similar ones — useful when the sound is the point. For talking-head, tutorial, or B-roll content, the audio is decorative and the trend adds nothing but a saturation penalty as thousands use the same clip.
What's true: trending sound is a discoverability tool for sound-driven formats only. Original audio can outperform — it makes <i>your</i> clip the source others have to use.
