A: This is the residential-proxy gap. Cheap IP checks catch datacenter proxies, but residential proxies route through real home connections and look legitimate to basic tools. One team got burned by exactly this.
Their IP filter passed everything, yet the advertiser flagged 19% as proxy-based. The affiliate cross-referenced the flagged IPs against a residential-proxy database and a check for impossible travel (same user 'in' three countries within minutes).
What they found in the 19%:
— 11% were known residential-proxy ASNs the cheap filter didn't cover
— 6% showed impossible travel between sessions
— 2% were false positives (real shared-connection users)
They upgraded to a fraud tool that scores residential proxies and added the impossible-travel rule. Over the next month, advertiser proxy flags fell from 19% to 4%.
Short version: datacenter IP checks miss residential proxies entirely — you need a tool that scores residential ASNs plus an impossible-travel check.
