An agency billed 3,000 hours of link removal. Rankings flat.
The myth: manual outreach to remove links is due diligence that pays off.
A brand paid an agency to email webmasters and remove "toxic" links before disavowing. The agency logged ~3,000 hours, sent 1,900 removal requests, got 140 removals, then disavowed the rest.
Twelve-month organic change: +0.6%. Essentially zero.
Actually, Google has repeatedly said you don't need to remove links to recover from algorithmic discounting — disavow alone covers it, and for unattacked sites you usually don't need disavow either. The outreach theater existed to justify the retainer.
Reality check: removal outreach is the most expensive way to achieve nothing. The hours bought a thick report, not a ranking.
