"Duplicate title tags will tank your site."
Proportionate, please.
An audit flagged 3,100 duplicate titles on a large forum — mostly paginated thread pages titled identically: "Discussion - PageName." The owner braced for disaster.
Reality: those pages were already canonicalized to page 1 and contributed ~0.5% of organic traffic combined. The "problem" was 3,100 near-worthless pages sharing a label that Google was already collapsing.
They added "- Page 2," "- Page 3" to paginated titles. Traffic change after 60 days: undetectable. The duplicate titles weren't costing anything because those pages weren't competing for anything.
Where duplicate titles do hurt: when two pages you actually want ranking fight for the same query and Google can't tell them apart. That's cannibalization — a real, measurable problem. A thousand identical pagination titles is just noise an audit tool flags to look busy. Fix cannibalization. Ignore the pagination.
