News site, 600GB, backups stored as one giant compressed tarball offsite. Server died during an election week. The backup existed — but pulling 600GB over their pipe and decompressing it took 19 hours. They lost the entire traffic spike and a sponsorship bonus tied to it.
After that: nightly images plus a hot standby, restore time down to 40 minutes.
A backup you can't restore FAST is barely a backup. Measure restore time, not backup time. Change my mind.
