Q: An advertiser rejected 33% of our leads for 'geo mismatch' — what was really happening?

Q: An advertiser rejected 33% of our leads for 'geo mismatch' — what was really happening?

A: Geo mismatch means the lead's claimed country didn't match the signals the advertiser saw. One team got hit with 33% rejection on a Tier-1 offer and assumed fraud.

They logged each rejected lead's IP country, browser language, and phone country code side by side. The pattern:
— 22% had a US IP but a phone number with a non-US country code (users abroad on home SIMs)
— 8% were VPN exit nodes in the wrong country (privacy-conscious real users, not fraud)
— 3% were genuine fraud spoofing geo

The big chunk wasn't fraud at all — it was real expats and travelers. The advertiser's rule was too blunt. Armed with the data, the affiliate negotiated a relaxed phone-country rule and added a VPN-detection note so honest VPN users got a softer check.

Result: rejection dropped from 33% to 11%, and most of the recovered leads converted normally.

Short version: 'geo mismatch' often catches real travelers and VPN users; log the actual signals before accepting the rejection.
