Case: Gzipping sitemaps fixed 50MB overflow
Three sitemap files exceeded the 50MB uncompressed limit by listing long URLs with tracking params. Google rejected them.
What we did:
— Stripped query strings; listed clean canonical URLs only
— Capped each file at 45,000 URLs as a safety margin
— Served gzipped with correct Content-Encoding
Measured outcome:
— Rejected files: 3 → 0
— Transfer size per file: ~48MB → ~3MB gzipped
— Fetch success rate: 100% across 21 days
Checklist:

✅ Under 50,000 URLs per file
✅ No tracking params in listed URLs
Definition of done: every file passes both limits with at least a 10% margin.
