A datacenter fire proved the 3-2-1 rule in one night
Two companies, same burned building (OVH Strasbourg, 2021, real event). Company A kept backups in the same datacenter "for speed." Company B paid an extra $12/month to replicate nightly to a second region.
A: total loss, 3 months of customer rebuilding, several never reopened.
B: restored in another region in under 6 hours, back online same day.
The whole difference was $12/month and the word "offsite." Still think one location is fine? Change my mind.
