A sporting-goods site replaced numbered pagination with infinite scroll. Slick. But within two months, 78% of their catalog stopped ranking. Only the first 24 items per category held positions.

The symptom mapped perfectly: anything that required a scroll to load was invisible in Search Console's coverage for those categories.

Turns out infinite scroll fetched the next batch via JS on a scroll event and never changed the URL or created a crawlable link. Googlebot loaded the category, got the first XHR batch (sometimes), and had no anchor to follow to products 25 through 600. No paginated URLs meant no crawl path. Two-thirds of the catalog was orphaned behind a scroll gesture the crawler doesn't perform.

We kept infinite scroll for users but added real paginated URLs (?page=2…) as crawlable links in the DOM, each rendering its slice server-side. Progressive enhancement, the boring way.

Google discovered the deeper URLs over five weeks. Indexed product pages went from 22% to 91% of catalog. Category-driven organic revenue +143% over the quarter.

Users scroll. Crawlers click. If there's no link, there's no page — no matter how much content the scroll would reveal.
