Case study: exporting at true 1080x1920 fixed a soft-feed problem
A creator's Shorts looked soft in-app. The export was 720x1280 upscaled by a phone editor. We re-exported the same 20 Shorts at native 1080x1920, H.264, 12 Mbps via CapCut desktop.
Result: no algorithm magic, but comments about 'blurry' stopped and avg view duration ticked up 4% — sharper text held readers.
Pros:
— Free fix, no reshoot
— Higher bitrate survived YouTube's recompression
Cons:
— Larger files, slower uploads
— Phone-only editors often cap at 720p — that was the real culprit
Price: free (CapCut desktop).
Verdict: check your export settings before blaming the algorithm. Do this audit once. Skip if you're already at native 1080.
