Ahrefs vs Search Console for hunting keyword cannibalization
I tested both on a real blog where rankings flickered between two URLs.
Google Search Console
➕ Filtered one query, saw 3 pages all catching impressions for it — cannibalization confirmed for free
➖ Tedious across hundreds of queries; no bulk view
Ahrefs (Organic Keywords)
➕ "Multiple pages ranking" is spottable via the URL column at scale
➖ Sampling meant it missed 2 of the 5 conflicts GSC caught
The case: GSC found 5 query/page conflicts. I consolidated 3 thin posts into 1 pillar with 301s, and added canonical hints on 2 others. Outcome: the surviving pillar went from position 11 to 4, and total clicks for that cluster rose +88% in 7 weeks despite deleting pages.
Best for: GSC for accuracy, Ahrefs for first-pass scale.
Price-vs-value: The fix cost nothing — just GSC and a redirect.
Pick GSC to confirm before you delete anything.
Skip consolidating on Ahrefs data alone — verify in GSC first.
