Fixing DMARC dropped bounce rate from 9% to 1.4%
An outbound team blamed bad lists for a 9% bounce rate. Audit with MXToolbox showed the real issue: SPF passed but DMARC was at p=none with no DKIM alignment. Half of receiving servers soft-rejected.
Fix: aligned DKIM, set DMARC to p=quarantine, added the mailbox domains to SPF includes.
Before: 9% bounce, 31% open.
After (2 weeks): 1.4% bounce, 43% open. Same list, same copy.
Pros of the fix
— Costs nothing but DNS time
— Compounds — every future send benefits
Cons
— DNS propagation guesswork
— DMARC misconfig can quarantine your own mail
Verdict: 5/5 on impact. Authentication, not list quality, was the hidden tax.
Who it's for: everyone — check this before buying any tool. Skip nothing here; it's the cheapest deliverability win that exists.
