Setting GSC international targeting on subfolders that already had hreflang
Hypothesis: explicit international targeting in Search Console is redundant once hreflang is correct. Methodology: one .com with seven language subfolders, all with clean reciprocal hreflang, no errors. We set explicit country targeting on four of the seven folders and left three as controls, measuring 8 weeks.
What we found:
— On the three control folders (hreflang only), country-correct serving was already ~91% by GSC's query-country breakdown. Hreflang was doing most of the work.
— On the four targeted folders, country-correct serving rose from a similar ~90% to ~96%. Real, but small.
— The clearest movement was on ambiguous queries — terms shared across markets (a brand name searched in both the UK and Ireland). There, targeting nudged the en-ie folder up for Irish searchers; clicks +9%.
Nuance: a generic .com with no per-folder targeting defaults to global, and Google leans on hreflang. The targeting setting mostly helps disambiguate same-language neighbors (UK/IE, US/CA-en) where hreflang alone is weak.
Caveats: GSC's country-targeting feature has been deprecated/changed before, so this lever's availability is itself unstable. n=1 property.
Conclusion: with clean hreflang, explicit targeting is a 5-point refinement, not a fix — valuable specifically for same-language regional overlap.
