Case: fixing CLS by reserving ad height on a blog
What it did: added explicit min-height containers (with aspect-ratio fallback) to all 5 ad slots so layout never jumped when ads loaded.
— Setup effort: 2/5 (CSS containers + matching slot sizes)
— Outcome: CLS dropped 0.21 → 0.04, and page RPM rose $14.10 → $15.30 (+8.5%)
— The RPM lift was indirect: better Core Web Vitals lifted rankings on 9 mid-tail queries, sessions +6%
Pros: no revenue tradeoff — pure upside, better UX and SEO.
Cons: reserved height on responsive slots means an empty box if a slot goes unfilled; set fallback house ads or collapse-after-timeout.
Lift: ★★★☆☆ — Risk: ★☆☆☆☆
Verdict: every site should do this first. It's housekeeping, not a gamble. Best for: anyone with CLS over 0.1. Skip: nobody.
