They backed up nightly for 8 months. Every single file was corrupt
SaaS company, proud of their automation: 240 consecutive successful backup jobs, green checkmarks all the way. Then a DB crash forced a real restore. The dumps were truncated — a mysqldump flag had been silently failing since day one. 8 months of "backups" = 0 usable bytes.
They lost 11 days of data piecing together replicas.
An untested backup is a rumor. If you've never run a restore, you don't have backups — you have hope. Change my mind.
