The gaming forum that ate a 240Gbps flood and stayed up

A modding community ran on a single 8-core box in Helsinki. One Friday a botnet pointed a 240Gbps UDP-and-SYN flood at it after a rival server got banned. The host nullrouted the IP within ninety seconds, taking the whole forum dark.

The origin IP was public in DNS history — that was the real wound.

What we changed: moved DNS behind the CDN, rotated the origin to a fresh IP, and locked the firewall to accept traffic only from the provider's edge ranges. L3/L4 floods now hit the anycast network and got absorbed across dozens of POPs; L7 got rate-limited at the edge.

The next attack, 310Gbps two weeks later, never reached origin. Forum uptime through the event: 100%. Origin CPU during the flood sat at 14%, serving only legitimate cache misses.

The number that mattered: 310Gbps absorbed, zero origin downtime.
