The espresso site that doubled revenue without doubling traffic
Month 1: I bought a tired espresso-machine review site for $4,100 — it pulled 18k visits/month and made $310 from Amazon at a 3% commission cap.
The whole thesis was that the money problem wasn't traffic, it was monetization. Amazon's home-and-kitchen rate had been gutted to 3%, so a $700 machine paid me $21.
Month 3: I layered in display ads through a mid-tier network and added two affiliate programs that paid flat $40-per-sale bounties on subscription coffee.
Then the setback — the coffee-subscription program shut its affiliate channel in Month 4 and I lost a third of the new revenue overnight. Scrambled, replaced it with a grinder brand's direct program at 8%.
Month 7: same 19k traffic, but revenue $310 → $690. Display did $240, Amazon held at $300, the grinder program did $150.
The takeaway: a site can be undermonetized AND under-trafficked at once, but they're separate problems. I fixed the cheaper one first. Don't assume you need more visitors when each visitor is worth a fraction of what they could be.
