The most boring niche I ever built earned the most
Month 1: $11 domain. The niche: water damage restoration. Mind-numbingly dull. No passion, no fun, no community. I picked it for one reason — the CPC on "water damage" terms was over $40.
Month 4: 20 informational posts — "what to do in the first 24 hours after a flood," "does insurance cover X." Traffic 2,000/mo. Revenue from display ads: $180. The dull stuff barely converted on affiliate.
The turn: month 6, I dropped affiliate entirely and switched to a lead-gen model — a form connecting visitors to local restoration contractors, who paid $25-60 per qualified lead.
The setback: my first lead-buyer was flaky and stopped paying me $400 he owed. I ate it, learned to use an escrow-style network instead of direct deals.
Month 11: 9,000 visitors/mo, but high-intent emergency traffic. $3,800/mo from leads — at a fraction of the traffic my fun hobby sites needed for half that.
The takeaway: passion niches are pleasant and poor; high-CPC service niches are boring and rich. Emergency/local-service topics monetize through lead-gen at dollars-per-visitor, not pennies. You can hate the topic and love the deposit.
