The campaign that worked for the wrong reason
It was results day when a coffee brand's nostalgia campaign posted a 35% mention lift. Marketing took the win. One analyst pulled the actual conversations to see what people were actually saying.
The reason behind the lift rewrote the story. Only a fraction of the buzz was about the nostalgia theme. The bulk — around 60% — fixated on one background detail in the ad: a discontinued cup design fans desperately wanted back. The campaign succeeded by accident, on a message marketing hadn't intended to send.
Instead of declaring victory and repeating the wrong formula, they brought the cup back. That follow-up drove a second mention wave 1.7x the first, this time on purpose.
The takeaway: a successful campaign and the reason it succeeded are two different facts. Read why mentions rose, not just that they did — or you'll confidently repeat the part that didn't matter.
