Unpopular opinion: people publish a new article and rush to add links to it from old pages to "give it a boost." Wrong direction for most cases.
New posts have no equity yet. Your aged, link-earning pages do. So the highest-leverage move is having every fresh post donate a contextual link up to your priority targets while it's being indexed and crawled.
Link new-to-old by default. Link old-to-new only for the rare piece you're deliberately promoting.
