The SEO win that wasn't
An affiliate site reported organic clicks up 30% year over year and put it in the investor deck as proof the content engine worked. Affiliate revenue, oddly, was flat.
The clue was splitting organic into branded versus non-branded queries. All the growth was branded — people searching the site's name, driven by a podcast sponsorship. Non-branded queries, the ones that find new buyers, had actually fallen 12%. The content engine was stalling; the brand spend was masking it.
They refocused on a cluster of non-branded buyer-intent terms they'd neglected.
Non-branded organic clicks recovered from -12% to +18% over two quarters, and affiliate revenue followed — because new searchers, not returning fans, were the ones who clicked offers.
The lesson: blended organic growth can be all brand and no discovery. Split branded from non-branded before you credit your content for someone else's marketing.
