The 30-day test I run before any annual SEO tool commit
Quick verdict — a method, not a tool. Annual plans save ~20%, but I've been burned. Here's the test I now run on the monthly plan first.
What I check in month one:
➕ Export the same report twice a week apart — does the data actually update, or is it stale?
➕ Pull 20 keywords I know the real rank for and grade the tool's accuracy myself
➕ Hit one real limit on purpose (row cap, crawl cap) to feel where it bites
➖ Note every 'upgrade to see this' wall — those are the true cost
Why: the demo and the daily reality differ. Two tools that looked equal in trials split hard once I tested refresh freshness and export caps.
The rule: never go annual on a tool you've used fewer than 30 real working days.
Pick this discipline if you're about to commit a year's budget — run the month first. Skip the annual discount until the tool survives your own accuracy and limit tests.
No affiliate angle — this just saves you money.
