Fixing name inconsistency across 40 citations triggered a Knowledge Panel
Question: entity SEO theory says Google needs a consistent, corroborated entity to recognize a brand. How much consistency, concretely?
What was done: a mid-size SaaS appeared as four name variants across the web ("AcmeFlow", "Acme Flow", "AcmeFlow.io", "Acme Flow Inc"). Over five weeks the team standardized the name on 41 of the highest-authority mentions they controlled or could request edits to (their site, Crunchbase, LinkedIn, G2, Wikidata, press pages), plus added matching sameAs Organization markup.
Outcome: 38 days after the Wikidata entry and schema went live, a Knowledge Panel appeared for the brand name. Branded-query click-through rose 12% (likely panel real estate). No change to non-branded rankings.
Caveat: the Wikidata edit is the most likely single trigger, and we changed many things at once — this is a recipe, not an isolated variable. Panels can also vanish.
Method note: manual SERP monitoring + Search Console branded-query segment, single entity.
Confidence: medium — consistent with entity-recognition theory, but bundled intervention.
