They told you: "We can offer low prices through efficient scale."
The efficiency is overselling. A host packs hundreds — sometimes thousands — of accounts onto one machine, betting most sites get near-zero traffic. The model only works because you stay small.
It's airline overbooking applied to RAM. Usually fine. Then a few neighbors spike together, the box thrashes, and everyone's site crawls at once — the planes all showed up.
Follow the money: the lower the headline price, the higher the density required to make margin. Cheap isn't a discount, it's a crowding ratio.
Reality: a $3 plan isn't a deal, it's a bet by the host that you'll never need what you paid for.
