Q: Can I just monitor my site from a script on the same server?

Q: Can I just monitor my site from a script on the same server?

A: You can, but it only catches application-level failures, never the ones users actually report. If the box loses power, the network drops, the data center has an outage, or DNS breaks, your local script dies with the site and pages nobody.

The rule: monitor from outside your own failure domain. An external service (or at minimum a tiny checker on a different provider and network) sees what a real visitor sees, including the path through your DNS, CDN, and ISP.

Local checks still have a place as internal health probes feeding your load balancer or autoscaler. Just don't treat "my server can reach itself" as proof the site is reachable.

Follow-up: even a free external monitor is better than none here. The independence matters more than the feature list.
