'Stop doing this' beat 'do this' by 28 points
Let me tell you about a head-to-head I ran. Two versions of the same tip. Version A, positive: "Do this to get more reach." Version B, negative: "Stop doing this — it's tanking your reach."
Here's the thing — I posted both to similar audiences a week apart. Version A held 45% at three seconds. Version B held 73%.
The result: a 28-point gap in retention from a single reframe, and Version B pulled 130k views to A's 31k.
The lesson: loss aversion beats gain promise in a cold open. "You might be missing out" is mild. "You're actively breaking something right now" is a fire alarm. When two hooks say the same tip, frame it as the mistake they're already making.
