Your silos leak because of one sloppy link
Client built clean topic silos. Loans here, credit cards there. Then every article linked to the same "best deals" hub. The hub bled link equity across silo walls and blurred the topical focus.
What I did:
— Mapped every internal link by silo. Found 200+ cross-silo links from body copy.
— Killed the ones that weren't genuinely relevant. Kept maybe 15 that actually helped a reader.
— Cross-silo links are fine in moderation — the myth that silos must be airtight is junk. But 200 random ones dilute everything.
— Anchor text inside a silo should reinforce that silo's core term.
Watch your nav and footer. Those sitewide links cross every silo by definition. If your footer links to all 8 silos from every page, your "silos" are decorative.
