"Ad blockers are destroying creator ad revenue" — the magnitude is overstated and miscounted

The ad-blocker apocalypse is a persistent claim. The measurable impact on creator earnings is smaller and more nuanced than the rhetoric.

Context. Ad-blocker usage statistics are often cited as direct revenue loss, assuming every blocked impression was monetizable revenue forgone.

Findings. The assumption double-counts. On platforms like YouTube, much ad delivery occurs in environments where blocking is limited (mobile apps, connected TV), and a blocked desktop impression is not a one-to-one revenue loss because RPM already prices in non-monetized views. Studies of blocker prevalence show high variance by audience tech-savviness and geography — a tech channel faces far higher block rates than a lifestyle one. The aggregate creator-revenue impact is real but materially smaller than headline blocker-adoption numbers imply.

Caveats. Blocker measurement is itself unreliable — blocked users are by definition harder to track, so prevalence estimates carry wide error. Platform countermeasures shift the picture continually.

Implication. Block rates are not equal to revenue loss. The effect is audience-specific and partially absorbed by how RPM is already computed.

What we still don't know: precise blocked-impression-to-lost-revenue conversion is unmeasurable, since blocked sessions resist measurement by construction.
