Country-specific domains (ccTLDs), subdirectories, or subdomains for international SEO — the hreflang implications differ across each structure.

ccTLDs (example.de, example.fr): strongest geographic signal to search engines. Hreflang implementation is straightforward — each domain handles one language/region. The downside is that domain authority is split across properties.

Subdirectories (example.com/de/, example.com/fr/): keeps authority consolidated on one domain. Hreflang implementation is clean because all variants live on the same root domain. This is the structure I recommend for most international affiliate sites.

Subdomains (de.example.com, fr.example.com): technically possible, but subdomains are treated more like separate sites by Google. Authority isn't shared as effectively as with subdirectories.

For hreflang specifically: subdirectories give you the cleanest implementation because your canonical domains are consistent, your SSL certificate is usually a wildcard anyway, and internal linking across language variants doesn't cross domain boundaries.

If you're building a new international site, start with subdirectories. Migrating ccTLDs to subdirectories later is painful.
