Quora and Stack Exchange still win some SERPs — for very specific query types
Quora and Stack Exchange tend to rank when Google sees a question that needs depth, not a sales page. They show up most often for:
• “how do I” problems
• comparisons with no clear winner
• edge cases and troubleshooting
• niche terms with weak publisher coverage
Why they stick: strong internal linking, long-tail relevance, lots of user language, and pages that answer one question cleanly. Google can map the query intent to a thread faster than to a generic article full of fluff.
For publishers and affiliates, the play is not to copy the format blindly. First, check whether the SERP rewards first-hand detail, a direct answer, or a discussion. Then build content that closes the gap: add concrete examples, real constraints, and a clear recommendation. If the forum result wins because it is broad, your page needs sharper scope. If it wins because it is specific, your page needs better specifics.
If you want visibility in those threads, answer like a user, not a brand. Keep the first 2 lines useful, avoid keyword stuffing, and make the post genuinely complete. When the query is question-shaped and the competition is thin, forums can hold positions for a long time.
