The myth: a bad link either helps you or hurts you.

Reality: there's a third bucket, and it's where most spam lands — ignored. Google can simply not pass any signal through a link. No boost, no damage, no math. It's a zero.

<i>Actually,</i> this is the mechanic that breaks the whole toxic-link panic. A forum profile spam link from 2019 isn't "dragging your domain down." It's contributing nothing, in either direction.

Vendors blur this on purpose. "Toxic" implies active poison. Most flagged links are inert. Inert doesn't need a cure.

Reality check: before you disavow, ask whether the link is hurting you or just sitting there doing nothing — the answer is usually the second.
