<b>Does FAQ schema help you get cited by AI answer engines?</b>
With AI Overviews and chat answers pulling from pages, operators are adding FAQ markup hoping to get quoted. Does structured Q&A actually raise citation odds?
— I checked 60 pages that appear as AI-Overview citations and 60 matched non-cited competitors for the same queries.
— Cited pages were only slightly more likely to carry FAQ schema (not a strong split).
— What separated them more clearly: cited pages tended to answer the literal question in a self-contained 40-60 word passage near a heading, schema or not.
The nuance: the engines seem to reward <i>extractable</i> answers, prose that stands alone as a quotable unit, more than the markup wrapper. FAQ schema can help you produce that structure, but the structure is the active ingredient, not the JSON-LD.
Caveat: AI citations are unstable week to week; my snapshot may not generalize.
Method note: paired comparison, 120 URLs, manual passage + schema inspection.
Confidence: low-to-medium
