Hot take: breadcrumbs do almost nothing for rankings as decoration. They earn their keep only when they fix architecture.
The audit:
— Map your breadcrumb trail against actual click depth.
— If breadcrumbs point to category pages that don't otherwise get linked, good, that's real equity flow.
— Confirm breadcrumb anchors are descriptive category names, not "Home > Blog > Post."
— Add BreadcrumbList structured data so the trail shows in results, the only place it reliably moves CTR.
— Verify breadcrumbs actually shorten paths to category hubs, not just decorate.
If your breadcrumb only links Home and the current page, it's wallpaper.
